Rotational Diets

Rotational Diet

Feeding the same food all the time can become boring for your dog. It's also believed that this can lead to allergies, food sensitivities and other diseases, which is why many experts recommend rotating diets every 2-6 months if you are feeding commercial dog food. Proponents of rotation diets point to food eaten in the wild by the ancestors of today’s dogs and cats.

It's important to note that changing diets too quickly or too frequently can cause digestive health problems. Most nutritionists recommend a one to two week transition period, during which increasing amounts of the new food are mixed with the old.

How to properly transition to a new food:

Days 1 & 2
75% Old Food
25% New Food
Days 3 & 4
50% Old Food
50% New Food
Days 5 & 6
25% Old Food
75% New Food
Days 7 & 8
100% New Food

Occasionally some vomiting and/or diarrhea can occur when introducing new foods as the digestive process is a complex and delicate system. When this occurs it is recommended to reduce the amount of new food the next feeding and slow the whole transition period down overall.

The needs of individual dogs can vary, but you can be confident about rotational feeding when shopping at Doggie Style Pets. We are thoughtfully selective about the brands that we carry and our staff is trained to help talk you through your nutritional choices for your pet.
